A handsome and characterful set of six Danish ladder-back dining chairs in solid oak with original woven seagrass seats — crafted in the tradition of the Danish country cabinetmaker, and closely related in form and spirit to the celebrated work of Hans Dau of Ribe, whose turned oak chairs with thick braided seagrass seats are among the most collectible Danish folk-modern pieces on the secondary market.
Each chair is constructed entirely from solid oak. The ladder back rises through three shaped, scalloped cross-rails to a pair of turned spindles topped with characteristic round ball finials — a detail that bridges the vernacular Baroque and mid-century Scandinavian traditions with ease. The robust turned legs are joined by stretchers and support the generously proportioned woven seagrass seat, hand-braided in a thick rope technique that is both visually bold and comfortable underfoot. The set of six side chairs is unified in construction and patina.
