Danish Oak Sideboard by Henning Kjærnulf, Sculptural Design, 1960s

A highly sculptural Danish oak sideboard designed by Henning (Henry) Kjærnulf and produced by Nyrup Møbelfabrik in the 1960s. This exceptional piece exemplifies Kjærnulf’s distinctive interpretation of Scandinavian Brutalism, where traditional cabinetmaking is elevated through bold geometry and architectural detailing.

Crafted in solid oak, the sideboard showcases richly figured grain throughout, enhanced by the warm, natural patina of the wood. The façade is defined by four striking cabinet doors, each adorned with deeply carved geometric panels that create a rhythmic and sculptural visual expression. These signature motifs are both decorative and structural, giving the piece a strong presence while maintaining balance and refinement.

The base features elegantly turned legs connected by shaped stretchers, adding a subtle sense of lightness to the otherwise robust construction.

Inside, the sideboard offers generous storage with adjustable shelving and compartmentalized sections, combining practicality with aesthetic clarity. The interior craftsmanship reflects the same attention to detail as the exterior, making it equally functional and visually compelling.

A rare and highly collectible example of Danish mid-century design, this sideboard is ideal for both classic and contemporary interiors. It stands as a testament to Kjærnulf’s unique design language and the enduring appeal of Scandinavian craftsmanship.
