A richly atmospheric oil on canvas townscape in the Danish Cubist-Expressionist tradition, signed by Copenhagen artist Benny Aage Møller and dated 1974 on the verso, with the title inscribed in the artist's own hand: Nyboder Søndag Eftermiddag — "Nyboder Sunday Afternoon." The work depicts the historic Nyboder district of Copenhagen, one of the city's most beloved and architecturally distinctive neighbourhoods, rendered through a mosaic-fragmented technique in which form is broken into interlocking tessellated planes of muted ochre, terracotta, slate blue, and cream.
The composition is immediately arresting: three gabled structures of differing scale occupy the picture plane with the authority of folk memory, their walls dissolved into jigsaw-like facets that simultaneously evoke medieval stained glass, Cloisonnist painting, and the fractured geometry of Synthetic Cubism. The palette is controlled and deeply considered — warm burnt oranges and pale yellows set against a cool, brooding sky of grey-blue — and the impasto surface catches light with a quiet materiality that photographs cannot fully convey.
Møller's handling of the cobblestone foreground is particularly accomplished: the ground plane fragments into the same tessellated vocabulary as the architecture, unifying the entire composition in a single visual language. The result is a painting that feels both timeless and unmistakably rooted in a specific Nordic urban sensibility — melancholic, contemplative, and formally rigorous.
The canvas is presented in a remarkable original driftwood frame, hand-assembled by the artist from salvaged timber and secured with period iron brackets. The frame itself is an artwork, its bleached, weathered surface creating a dialogue with the painting's earthy palette and amplifying the work's handmade character.
Signed with the artist's monogram lower right; fully inscribed with title, full signature, and date on the verso.
