A Danish Modern brass and teak chandelier of exceptional sculptural presence, this rare 5-arm ceiling fixture is attributed to Bent Karlby (Bengt Karlby) for Lyfa, Denmark, and dates to the 1950s — the earliest and most sought-after chapter of Karlby's celebrated four-decade collaboration with the legendary Copenhagen lighting house.
The chandelier is constructed around a dramatically tapered double-ended teak spindle — a detail immediately recognisable as characteristic of Karlby's early Lyfa output — from which five elegantly swept patinated brass arms radiate outward, each terminating in a matching teak cone fitted with a polished brass collar. The five tall, conical opaline glass shades cast a warm, diffused glow that exemplifies the hygge-inflected sensibility that made Danish Modern lighting universally desirable. The combination of organic warmth and Atomic Age geometry makes this an unusually accomplished example, and the 5-arm format in teak and brass is among the rarer configurations to appear on the market.
Whether installed over a dining table, in an entrance hall, or as the centrepiece of a collector's study, this piece commands attention with the quiet authority of the finest Scandinavian design.
